Hello Amberly families! Welcome to the 2023 - 2024 school year!
My name is Tressa Crosman. I will be your child's music teacher this school year. This is my 18th year of teaching at Amberly Elementary. Sixteen of those years have been teaching music! I am so excited to be able to share musical experiences with your child in a fun and creative environment.
One of my favorite things about teaching music to elementary students is having the chance to see children discover their own unique musical abilities. In the Amberly music room, students experience music education through musical games, stories, solving puzzles, improvising, movement, and many more activities appropriate for active bodies and minds.
The main musical concepts you will want to check in with your child about include rhythm, melody, harmony, form, timbre, and expression. Students will explore all of these concepts from Y5s through 5th grade on varying levels based on their skills and development. Skills will be built upon one another as students move from the early to later grades.
Portage Public Schools' Elementary Music Department follows the nine National Standards for Music Education. Those standards are as follows:
③ Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
④ Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines.
⑤ Reading and notating music.
⑥ Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
⑦ Evaluating music and music performances.
⑧ Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
⑨ Understanding music in relation to history and culture.
I am looking forward to having great musical experiences with your child this school year! Please look for more information regarding 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade musical programs as we move through the year. The dates for those are listed below for your yearly planning.
